A postpartum MOT provides a comprehensive postnatal assessment after birth, it can be seen as a check up, regardless of when you have given birth. You might book this to check the tone of of your pelvic floor, and get some advice about the health of your pelvis, even is you have no specific concerns.

Emma is a highly experienced physiotherapist with over 10 years’ experience in the industry. She gained her first degree in Physiotherapy and then went on to complete a Master’s degree in Sports & Exercise medicine in at Queen Mary’s University London under the instruction of some of the most renowned sports medicine doctors and physiotherapists in the country. She also has qualifications as a clinical Pilates instructor with the Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute.
Emma is used to working with clients of all ages, with a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. She has completed post-graduate training in ante-natal and post-natal physiotherapy, addressing pelvic pain, back pain, mobility issues, and post-natal recovery. She is able to treat expectant mothers during and after pregnancy to ensure you have the most comfortable experience and fastest recovery.
Emma is a member of the Pelvic Obstetric & Gynaecological Physiotherapy group.
She combines her 10 years’ experience in the profession to holistically assess and treat Pelvic Dysfunctions such as:

What is the Pelvic Floor?
The pelvic floor is a ‘hammock’ musculature that offers support to the organs of your pelvis and is key to the stability of your lumbar spine, sacrum and pubis. The tone of this musculature can change with the different stages of a woman’s life. It can become weak (often after pregnancy or menopause) or lose elasticity and become rigid (due to pelvic pain, prolonged sitting, injury and/or stress). One in two women will experience urinary incontinence at some point in their lives but only one in five seek help.
What is urinary incontinence?
Stress Incontinence – leaking urine when you cough, laugh, sneeze or jump is usually caused by weakness of the Pelvic floor muscles (that form the floor of the core). Guided pelvic floor strengthening is often a large part of treatment.
Urge Incontinence (or Over Active Bladder) – Leaking urine when you feel a sudden urge to ‘go’. Pelvic floor exercises can also play a part here, but often the bladder needs to be ‘re-trained’ in it’s habits.
Examining the pelvic Floor:
Women’s Health Physiotherapists assess the pelvic floor by performing an internal examination. This helps them to determine and assess the tone and strength of the internal pelvic floor muscles. They can also test the strength and endurance of these muscles during pelvic floor exercises and give guidance on the best way for you to perform these exercises.
This part of the assessment can be performed at the first appointment, but only if you feel comfortable and give your valid consent. You are more than welcome to bring someone with you. We will always respect your wishes; you may decline a vaginal examination or stop the examination at any time.
