Who was Pilates?
Joseph H. Pilates was born December 9, 1883 in Germany. As a child, he suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever and dedicated his entire life to improving his physical strength. He began teaching his method to fellow camp members during forced internment in WW1. His concepts and exercises had been developed over many years of self-study including yoga, Zen, and ancient Greek and Roman physical regimens. He called this regimen “Contrology”. “I’m fifty years ahead of my time,” Joe once claimed. He was right.
Since his time, extensive research on movement and the body has influenced the evolution of Pilates movements. The Pilates exercise system strengthens and tones deep core musculature, developing a stronger leaner body for ease of movement and mind. At Brighton Pilates Studio we believe in movement as a tool for change, shifting towards efficient integrated movement and significantly reducing the risk of future injury.
